Carrick Ares is a person who grows up without belief. He sees life as irrelevant, accidental, temporary. The people he has been surrounded by have told him such things, and he does not question it. Then he dies in a car crash aged twenty-nine and has a Near-Death Experience. He wants to know how it was possible that he had perceived life to be so empty beforehand. How had he been so ignorant to the truth of life?
His family‘s reaction is one of alarm. A psychiatrist, Doctor Paul Turnstone, is called upon. Thus begins a dialogue between the Doctor and his patient which encompasses a huge array of subjects. The topics they cover include the central themes of existence: identity, purpose and the concept of death.
